How Long Does PDR Take?
Realistic timelines for paintless dent repair, from a single door ding to full-vehicle hail damage. Plus the variables that affect how fast we can return your vehicle.
By the Wheelers Auto Body Team · Updated April 2026 · Reviewed by certified PDR technicians
Speed is one of PDR's biggest advantages over traditional body work. Most single dents complete in under two hours. Most hail damage finishes in under a week. There are no paint cure cycles, no parts shipping delays, no long disassembly processes for most damage types. The trade-off is that PDR timelines are still real and they vary based on what you bring in.
This guide gives you honest timeline expectations for every category of PDR work, explains what variables can extend a repair, and tells you exactly how to plan around the timeline. The goal is to give you accurate expectations going in so you can schedule your life around the repair instead of being surprised by it.
How long PDR takes by job type.
PDR timelines fall into five tiers based on dent count, panel count, and access requirements. Each tier has a typical range, and within that range, your specific repair lands based on vehicle make and access patterns.
Hours — Single small dent
Quarter-coin to dollar-coin-sized dent on an accessible flat panel. Typical door ding from a parking lot. Drop off, repair, pick up the same day with a few hours notice.
Hours — Single moderate dent
Larger dent (3-6 inches) or dent requiring interior trim removal for access. Most still complete same-day with a morning drop-off and afternoon pickup.
Hours — Multi-dent on one panel
Multiple dings on a single door, fender, or hood. Common from a runaway shopping cart or sustained low-impact contact. Often completes in one work day.
Days — Multi-panel light damage
30-60 dents spread across two or three panels. Light hail or scattered damage from a single event. Drop off in the morning, ready by end of next day.
Days — Full-vehicle hail damage
60-150+ dents across all upward-facing panels. Includes disassembly for roof and quarter panel access. Most typical hail repairs land here.
What we control versus what we do not.
PDR has fewer external variables than traditional body work. There are no paint cure cycles to wait through and no parts ordering. The variables that remain are still real, and understanding them helps explain why two seemingly similar repairs can take different amounts of time.
Dent Count
The biggest variable. Each dent requires precision work that cannot be rushed. A 30-dent hail repair takes roughly half the time of a 60-dent repair, even when both are on similar vehicles.
Access Difficulty
Roof dents require partial headliner removal. Quarter panel dents may need trim disassembly. Body line dents and edge dents need special tools and more time per dent. Access setup can add 1-3 hours at the start of a multi-panel job.
Vehicle Make and Model
Modern luxury vehicles often have complex interior trim that adds disassembly time. Older or simpler vehicles can be quicker to access. Specific make-and-model knowledge helps us plan timelines accurately.
Insurance Approval
For claims, the carrier approval typically takes 24-48 hours. We can begin the assessment immediately but cannot start actual repair work until the claim is approved unless you authorize out-of-pocket payment.
Shop Workload
After major hail storms, shop workload temporarily exceeds capacity. Wait time for an appointment can extend from same-day to 1-2 weeks during peak periods. The repair itself is still fast once it starts.
Hybrid Repair Needs
Some damage requires a mix of PDR and traditional body work on different panels. The traditional portion adds paint cure time to the overall timeline. We coordinate so the work happens in parallel where possible.
Anatomy of a single-dent repair timeline.
A typical single door ding repair, start to finish, breaks down into five steps. Knowing the breakdown helps explain why even the smallest jobs need an hour or two.
Minutes — Intake and assessment
Vehicle in, dent inspected under PDR lighting, written estimate provided. Includes paperwork and confirming you authorize the repair.
Minutes — Disassembly for access
Interior door panel removed, weather sheeting pulled back, access prepared. For dents not requiring disassembly, this step is skipped.
Minutes — The PDR work
Technician massages the dent out using rods and reflection board. Pure repair time on a typical door ding. Larger or more difficult dents extend this step.
Minutes — Reassembly and inspection
Door panel and trim reinstalled, repair inspected under multiple lighting angles to verify the dent is invisible.
Minutes — Final detail and pickup
Vehicle wiped down, repair documented with before-and-after photos, paperwork completed. You drive away.
Total for a typical single door ding: roughly 90 minutes from drop-off to drive-away. Larger or more difficult dings extend the PDR work portion but the other steps stay constant.
Why hail repair takes days.
Hail damage is just many small dents distributed across multiple panels. Each individual dent still takes precision work. The cumulative time is what extends hail repairs to days rather than hours.
Roughly speaking, an experienced PDR technician can repair 8-15 hail dents per hour on flat hood and trunk panels with good access. On roof dents requiring partial headliner removal and reflection board work in tight space, the rate drops to 5-10 dents per hour. On quarter panels with limited back access where glue pulling may be needed, the rate drops further to 4-8 dents per hour.
Add disassembly time at the start (2-4 hours for full-vehicle hail to drop the headliner, remove trim, prep access points), reassembly time at the end (1-2 hours), and insurance approval time (24-48 hours before work can begin), and most full-vehicle hail repairs land in the 3-7 day range.
Multiple technicians working the same vehicle in parallel can cut repair time roughly in half on large hail jobs. We coordinate technician assignments based on workload and the specific vehicle to optimize total turnaround.
Why PDR is so much faster than traditional.
Traditional body work timelines are dominated by paint cure cycles, parts ordering, and finishing. None of these apply to PDR. The result is typically a 5-10x speed advantage for PDR over traditional repair on equivalent damage.
A single door ding through traditional repair takes 4-7 business days because of paint cure time alone. The visible work is half a day; the rest is waiting for paint to cure properly. The same door ding through PDR is done in 90 minutes because no paint is involved.
Full-vehicle hail damage through traditional refinishing takes 14-21 days because every panel needs to be primed, painted, cured, and refinished sequentially. The same hail damage through PDR finishes in 3-7 days because there is no paint cycle to wait through.
For drivers who depend on their vehicle every day, this time difference is meaningful financially even before considering the cost of a rental car or the inconvenience of being without your vehicle for two weeks. PDR's speed advantage compounds with its cost advantage.
How to get same-day service.
Same-day PDR service is achievable for most single-dent and small multi-dent repairs if you do three things. First, call ahead to schedule rather than walking in. Walk-ins are accommodated when possible but cannot be guaranteed. Second, drop off in the morning. Same-day pickup typically requires a 9-10 AM drop-off window. Third, send photos in advance if possible so we can pre-assess and have tools ready when you arrive.
Same-day service is harder during peak hail season. Major Wisconsin hail storms produce sudden surges in workload that fill the schedule for 1-2 weeks. We prioritize hail claims with insurance approval already in place, then work through walk-ins as capacity allows. If your damage is not hail-related, scheduling 3-5 days ahead helps avoid hail-season delays.
For multi-day jobs, we offer drop-off the night before and same-day return when possible. Loaner vehicles and rental coordination are available for jobs that span multiple days, though most PDR jobs are short enough that a rental is unnecessary.
PDR timeline questions answered.
How long does paintless dent repair take?
Most single-dent PDR takes 1-2 hours. Moderate dents requiring trim removal take 2-4 hours. Multi-dent repairs on one or two panels take 4-8 hours. Full-vehicle hail damage repairs take 3-7 business days depending on dent count and severity.
Can PDR be done same day?
Yes, most single-dent and small multi-dent PDR jobs complete same day. Schedule an appointment in advance for guaranteed same-day completion. Walk-in same-day service depends on shop availability and current workload.
Why does hail damage take longer than a single dent?
Hail damage involves dozens to hundreds of individual dents across multiple panels. Each dent still requires the same precision work as a single dent. The cumulative time is what extends the timeline. Disassembly for roof and quarter panel access also adds setup time at the start of the repair.
What slows down PDR repairs?
The most common factors that extend PDR timelines are insurance approval delays for hail claims, disassembly time on vehicles with limited access, dents on body lines or near edges that require special techniques, and large dent counts that simply require more hours. Parts wait is rare for PDR because no replacement parts are needed.
Is PDR faster than traditional body work?
Yes, significantly. PDR avoids paint cure cycles which alone add 1-3 days to traditional body work timelines. A single dent that takes 4-7 days through traditional repair often completes same-day with PDR. On hail damage, PDR can save 1-2 weeks compared to panel-by-panel refinishing.
